Historical Facts of The Butterfly Lovers

The story of the unwavering love between Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai is worth passing down from generation to generation. The tombs of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai have been found today and have been traced back to the Jin Dynasty. Many years of research have shown that Ma Wencai built a small house next to their graves and spent the rest of his life guarding their graves alone.

Zhou Jingshu, director of the Chinese Folk Artists Association and president of the Chinese Liang Zhu Culture Research Association, has been studying the culture of Liang Zhu (the Butterfly Lovers) for 30 years. During this time, he has constantly told people that: “The story of Liang Zhu is neither a myth nor fabrication; it is based on real events.”

Many experts and scholars have researched and confirmed that Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai were real historical figures, and that the love story between them is also true. Many historical documents, cultural relics and monuments can provide evidence.
Northern and Southern Dynasties Documents.

The earliest written record of Liang Zhu is found in the book Shan Juan Records from the time of Emperor Wu of the Southern Dynasty (483-493 AD): “Emperor Wu of Qi redeemed Yingtai’s former property to build a temple.” Since then, writings of the story have surfaced from the early Tang Dynasty to the Ming and Qing Dynasties; therefore, we can be certain that the love story between Liang and Zhu is true and not just a folk tale.

The Lingering Farewell is a beautiful scene in Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. By all accounts, it is exactly 18 Chinese miles from the Hongluo Academy to Zhu Yingtai’s home, and about 18 Chinese miles from the academy to Liang Shanbo’s home in Lianggang, He Xiao Town. Zhu Yingtai’s home is in the northeast of the academy, while Liang Shanbo’s home is in the northwest of the academy. The roads from their homes to the academy both pass through Caoqiao, which is about eight Chinese miles from the academy.
